“The NRL needs to look at a draft”: Webster

2021-03-03T13:00+11:00

Could a draft solve several problems for the NRL?

The Sydney Morning Herald’s Andrew Webster thinks so.

Joining Matt White on SEN 1170 Mornings, Webster believes the implementation of a draft would help stem free-for-all player movement, as well as generating positive media coverage for the code.

“I think the NRL needs to look at a draft,” Webster said.

“The transfer of players between clubs during the season isn’t working.

“The game would benefit as the AFL does with all the stories and media interest in the off-season.

“Instead of focusing on off-field scandals they can focus on the draft.

“I think it works beautifully in other sports, it’s an event. Look at how much coverage it generates in the NBA and NFL in particular.

“I think it’s something the game has to look at as well.”

White agreed with Webster’s sentiment, adding that there is no way the draft isn’t a viable option for the league to pursue.

“I buy into that as well, you’re 100 per cent right,” White replied.

“I think it solves a lot of problems in the player transfer market.

“It also brings that showpiece and the showcase to the sport itself, there’s no way that it can’t work for what it would generate for the game.”

The NRL will also reportedly look to include a trade window in the coming years to slow increasing player movement.
