Aussie Test great not happy with Warner’s selection decision

Ian Healy has criticised David Warner’s decision to play the final two Tests in Australia’s recent series against India, despite not being fully fit.

Warner conceded he rushed back from a groin injury to play the SCG and Gabba Tests as Australia lost the series 2-1.

“I made the call to play those Test matches. I felt I needed to be out there,” Warner told reporters on Wednesday.

“Looking back in hindsight, I probably wouldn't have done that.”

The veteran opener scored 67 runs in four innings and looked restricted in his movement after hurting his groin in a one-day match in November.

Test great Healy said the decision to play Warner was a “very dangerous strategy” and also laid the blame at Australia’s medical team.

“You need foresight, not hindsight in those sorts of decisions,” the former Australian wicketkeeper told SEN’s Dwayne’s World.

“Making yourself available and then being allowed to be available, there’s more than David Warner that let us down.

“Don’t get spotted on the bench all match getting treatment, you do that at night or mornings before you get to the ground, you be ready to play like everyone else that’s fully fit.

“You’ve said you’re fully fit now get on with it.

"That was always the pressure of playing or not to play decisions, now they’ve got medical teams who allow you to be available.

“I don’t know whether hindsight is a good enough reason for mine. They knew he wasn’t quite right in a very important Test, and that was a very dangerous strategy.”
