On SEN’s the Captain’s Run, Kane Cornes was posed five over or under scenarios about the upcoming sporting landscape.
Cornes was asked to declare his thoughts on the scenarios and whether they would meet the over/under mark.
See his thoughts below:
OVER/UNDER: Max King to kick 35 goals in 2021
Kane says: UNDER
“Gee I love this player. The excitement is worth it because once he fills out he’s going to be something pretty special and St Kilda is lucky that they’ve got him.”
“He kicked three goals last night and 22 from his 18 games last year. Will he kick 35 this year? I don’t think so.
“I don’t think he’ll get anywhere near the 50 that (Matthew Lloyd) is suggesting, he’ll get there in time, I don’t think that’s this year.”
OVER/UNDER: Joe Daniher as the 26th best player in the competition
Kane says: OVER
“This is easy, isn’t it? Joe Daniher isn’t the 26th best player in the game right now. In fact, he’s probably not in the top 100.”
“On the evidence of what he has done in the last four seasons, now on potential, and I’m not sure the criteria of (Mark Robinson’s) top 50, whether it’s by the end of the year or right now.
“If it’s right now, he’s nowhere near that. He played four games last year and kicked three goals.”
OVER/UNDER: Patrick Cripps as the 7th best player in the competition
Kane says: OVER
“(Robinson had) Patrick Cripps at number seven and you look at and think, that’s about right.”
“But looking a little bit closer to it, Cripps played every game last year and he finished ninth in a club best and fairest that didn’t play finals.
“You can’t be the seventh best player in the competition if you finished ninth in your own club’s best and fairest and it wasn’t a successful team.
“He needs to be more influential on games. He kicked seven goals for the season last year. He had nearly 200 more handballs than kicks, he needs to be more influential on games of footy and perhaps we have overrated the actual output that he has.
“I respect him for the heavy lifting he’s done, but he finished ninth in the club’s best and fairest, he cannot be the seventh best player in the competition.”
OVER/UNDER: A three year contract extension for Jake Lever
Kane says: OVER
“I would’ve thought over. I don’t see the urgency to sign him to a three-year deal.”
“Max Gawn got four years, I can understand that, but I probably would’ve waited until the last third of the season before I made a call on that considering the injuries he has had.”
OVER/UNDER: TV volume at 40 per cent for Brian Taylor and James Brayshaw calling Friday night footy
Kane says: OVER
“That’s harsh. I’m over. I think that is an excellent team.”
“I think those two have excellent chemistry and I think they’ll do a fine job.”
