Israel Folau given fresh hope of NRL return

2021-03-09T08:36+11:00

A report in The Daily Telegraph has uncovered an alternate route for Israel Folau to make his NRL return.

It is believed the Queensland Rugby League board will allow Folau to play in the domestic Queensland Cup competition, which could then provide a pathway for him through to first-grade.

Speaking on SEN 1170 Breakfast, Michael Carayannis described the opportunity as a "glimmer of hope" for the former Wallabies star.

“There is indications that the QRL will give him permission to play in the Queensland Cup, if a side reaches it and wants to register him," Carayannis said.

“That is probably the pathway for Israel back into the NRL.

“This will give him a glimmer of hope."

Carayannis believes a Queensland Cup opportunity could present as a test run for an NRL club looking to give Folau a chance.

“There’s obviously relations between the Queensland Cup and the Broncos, as well as a few other NRL sides,” he added.

“If he goes there and performs at a decent level, as well as keeping his name clean, that’ll keep the door open once again.”
