Lyon's curiosity with Aliir Aliir's Power trade

2021-03-09T13:03+11:00

Garry Lyon is curious as to why Port Adelaide was the only club interested in acquiring intercept defender Aliir Aliir.

Aliir was traded to the Power from Sydney in exchange for a future second-round draft pick and has slotted in seamlessly at Alberton.

The 26-year-old, who stands at 196cm, adds more height and athleticism to Port’s backline and can pinch hit in the ruck if required, making him an ideal replacement for retired utility Justin Westhoff.

Lyon says Port Adelaide looked “ominous” after belting Adelaide by 71 points in their final hit-out before Round 1.

“They were six points off beating Richmond in a Preliminary Final and they’ve added Aliir Aliir,” he told SEN Breakfast.

“Why were Port the only team chasing him? There are so many teams screaming out for a defender of that ilk.

“Geez he’s a good player. And then Orazio (Fantasia) on top of that.

“I thought Port looked ominous.”

So why did Sydney decide to trade Aliir who played 14 of 17 games in 2020?

“I think that’s going to be the question that everyone is going to be asking,” Tim Watson said.

“Why is he still not at Sydney?

“What is it that they didn’t like about the way that he was playing? Is it his decision-making?”

Aliir was moved on by the Swans with a year remaining on his contract.
