The side who "really impressed" Matt Rendell during pre-season games

2021-03-14T09:57+11:00

Former AFL recruiter Matt Rendell says he was left impressed by Essendon’s effort in their pre-season match against Geelong, declaring they may not even miss Adam Saad.

The Bombers endured a turbulent off-season, which saw Ben Rutten take over as the club’s new senior coach, while the likes of Saad, Orazio Fantasia, Joe Daniher and Conor McKenna all departed.

Despite losing to the Cats last Saturday night, Rendell said there were plenty of positives for Essendon to take into the season proper.

“Essendon were really impressive (last Saturday night) I thought,” he said on SEN’s Dwayne’s World.

“They had a crack and I really like what they did.

“I was really impressed; they have enough good midfielders and I’m not so sure they’re going to miss Saad so much.

“I loved how they had a massive crack, they were fantastic.”

Essendon face off against Hawthorn in their season-opener on Saturday night, in what will be Rutten’s first official game in charge after taking over from John Worsfold at the end of last season.

The club is expected to hand senior debuts to top 10 draft picks Nik Cox and Archie Perkins, while young key forward Harry Jones is also tipped to play his first game in Essendon colours.
