The player who impressed Leigh Matthews in Round 1

2021-03-23T19:20+11:00

Leigh Matthews has singled out Melbourne’s Kysaiah Pickett for particular praise after being impressed by his performance against Fremantle on Saturday.

The teenager kicked a goal and had four score involvements, as part of a 12-disposal game in the Dees’ win over the Dockers in Round 1.

Leigh Matthews said Pickett’s speed was a particular stand out, saying he added an extra dynamic to Simon Goodwin’s side.

“Kossie Pickett for Melbourne, he has lightning speed,” he said on Sportsday when asked who impressed him from the opening round.

“He has a lot of talent and still only 19 and in his second year, but when you have that sort of speed in your legs – he’s going to be really important for Melbourne as he develops.

“That lockdown and chase forward that they won’t have to do a lot with, it’s a bit like Cyril Rioli was in his day.

“If they can do that (and involve him more), they don’t have to be terrible good with ball in hand.”

Melbourne will be looking to make it two wins from two when they face St Kilda at Marvel Stadium on Saturday night.
