AFL commits to goal-line cameras at all venues

2021-03-24T13:08+11:00

THE AFL has committed to having goal-line cameras installed at all venues this year.

The league late last season released a statement revealing it had installed the technology at all venues for the remaining four rounds after a score review flash point in Alice Springs in Round 14.

But it has since ensured the cameras will be in place for every match and every venue of a 2021 season that includes a match in Ballarat in Round 4.

Melbourne’s three-point win over St Kilda at Traeger Park in Round 14 last year came after replays of a critical Christian Petracca goal in the last quarter couldn’t determine whether it had been touched on the line.

Traeger Park did not have cameras on the goal posts, prompting Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin to argue the league had to install the technology at all venues.

"I think I spoke about this a while ago around the importance of getting it right. If we can't get the technology to a point where you can't make critical calls, you are better off not having it," Goodwin said post-match.

"I think it's there designed to pick up the obvious ones but when you are trying to pick up touch ones from a fair way out or on the goal line, you need the technology there at every venue."
