Swans great looks back on Eagles rivalry and the "relief" of 2005

Sydney and West Coast forged one of the AFL’s greatest rivalries during the mid-2000s.

Six consecutive games between the Swans and Eagles from 2005 and 2007 were decided by less than a goal – two of those were in Grand Finals.

Sydney snapped a 72-year premiership drought with a thrilling four-point win in the 2005 decider and club great Michael O'Loughlin looked back on that memorable day.

“That’s an incredible stat (six games by under a kick),” O'Loughlin told SEN's This Is Your Sporting Life thanks to Tobin Brothers Funerals.

“Straight away we knew what we were expecting from them. We knew it was going to be tight.

“We get the chocolates in the end and that was a huge relief for our football club.

“We had not had much success – 70-odd years (without a premiership) – so to finally get the big one was amazing.

“To be able to win it and present it back to the guys at South Melbourne and then take it to Sydney was unbelievable.”

O'Loughlin, 44, kicked 521 goals in 303 games for the Swans.

The dual All-Australian called time on his AFL career at the end of 2009.
