Geelong small forward provides candid insight into current game plan

Geelong’s game style has been a constant talking point throughout the opening round of the season, with small forward Gryan Miers saying he personally prefers when the ball moves quicker.

The Cats recorded their second win of the season against Hawthorn on Easter Monday, emerging victorious by five points despite conceding four of the last five goals of the match.

Miers defended the club’s style of play, which is noticeable more measured compared to some of the other sides in the competition.

He said the “whole team” prefers when the ball moves faster, but backed the current style which saw Geelong reach last year’s Grand Final.

“I definitely prefer if (the ball moves) faster,” he said on Sportsday.

“Our whole team does (as well), but it’s all about holding on to possession and making opposition defend for long times and going in on our terms and that’s worked in the past and it did show last year with the Grand Final appearance.

“It does seem to work and we go both ways which is a strength of ours.”

Miers, who had 18 touches and kicked a goal in the win over the Hawks, said as fan the more open style of game this season was exciting as it meant teams were able to stay in matches for longer.

“I love (the quicker game style),” he said.

“I’ve always been a fan of footy and I see it both ways as a player and a fan, as a player it’s hard when you have the lead, but it also means you’re always in the game.

“It’s shown in the opening rounds that no lead is safe and it makes it entertaining for the fans, the game is always on the line which is good.

“Five or 10 years ago you could flood back with a 30-point lead and sometimes the game was over by quarter time.”
