The Carlton recruit "setting the world on fire" after three games

2021-04-06T08:35+10:00

Tim Watson has been impressed with a pair of Carlton forwards across the first three weeks of the season.

The Blues gave up picks 30 and 51 to Geelong in the trade period for Lachie Fogarty and pick 38 and it has proven a savvy move.

Playing across half forward and rotating on-ball, Fogarty has averaged 22 disposals, seven score involvements, five marks and four inside 50s per game as a Blue.

He was particularly influential in the club’s Round 3 win over Fremantle, picking up 25 disposals, eight score involvements, seven marks, seven tackles, five inside 50s and kicking a goal.

“The guy that’s really setting the world on fire for them is Fogarty,” Watson told SEN Breakfast.

“He’s a really, really good player and he’ll only get better as well. They’ve got a real find there.”

Jack Silvagni has also been influential in his two games so far this season, playing as a third marking tall inside 50 and a link player up the ground.

“He is fulfilling a really important role for them in their forward line, Jack,” Watson said.

“He could have and should have kicked three, maybe four goals, he missed two set shots.”

Silvagni finished with 18 disposals and 10 score involvements on Sunday after missing Round 2 with a shoulder niggle.

Garry Lyon was equally impressed with the 23-year-old’s performance.

“I agree with you wholeheartedly. I thought early in that game he was the forward that was working his backside off,” Lyon said.

“You know what he’s got, and it’s a Silvagni trait, he’s got great strength from his hips down.

“He can get tackled and then he can bulldoze his way through it, get his arms free and get away a little handball.

“I think he’s been really important.”

The 45-point win over Fremantle got Carlton on the board for the 2021 season.

Watson however wants to see a bit more from the Blues before buying in.

“I’m just holding fire on Carlton. That was great for them and what they’re doing and their confidence, but it was a reasonably easy kill for them against Fremantle at the weekend,” he said.

“But what that does is it builds confidences in individuals and in the team collectively.”

Carlton travels north to take on Gold Coast on Saturday night before a tough fortnight against Port Adelaide and Brisbane.
