Bennett rules out Broncos return but leaves door ajar for NRL's 17th franchise

South Sydney coach Wayne Bennett has all but ruled out a return to the Brisbane Broncos.

The legendary coach informed Rabbitohs powerbrokers of his decision to relocate to Brisbane at the end of the year, and thereafter rumours began swirling that the 71-year-old could return to the Broncos.

While Bennett led the club to six premierships throughout his tenure at Red Hill, he told reporters yesterday that he wouldn’t be returning to the club after ending his second Broncos stint on a sour note.

“I’ve moved on and that’s where it is at and that’s where it can stay, as far as I am concerned,” Bennett said.

Despite ruling out a return to the Broncos, Bennett believes he could make a contribution to a new franchise if the NRL opts to hand Brisbane a second team from 2023.

“If there’s a new franchise, they will be looking to buy players and there is teams to set up and all that,” Bennett said.

“I love what I do, and I think I can make a contribution.”

Bennett will see out the remainder of the 2021 season with the South Sydney Rabbitohs before making his move north.
