Forward pair on notice as Magpies urged to swing the axe

2021-04-09T09:14+10:00

David King expects Collingwood coach Nathan Buckley to swing the axe after last week’s after-the-siren loss to Brisbane.

The Magpies, who led by five points with under a minute left, allowed Lions defender Daniel Rich access to the corridor to pick out Zac Bailey who slotted the match-winning goal.

King says the defensive efforts of two Collingwood players in particular let the side down in the dying stages of the match – and it could cost them their spots for Saturday’s match against GWS.

“I would make change off the back of that final play, I really would,” King told SEN’s The Picks.

“People say, ‘You’re too harsh, you’re too severe’ but when (Will) Hoskin-Elliott and (Josh) Thomas decide to stay forward of the ball when all you’re trying to do is save the game in that last 40 seconds, nope, not for me.

“Where’s your head? Where’s your head at?

“If you’re thinking about getting reward for yourself when the team just needs you to fight and fight, guard the corridor and allow Daniel Rich to stroll through the middle of Marvel (Stadium).

“I think Nathan (Buckley) will swing the axe. I think he’ll drop a couple of those guys.”

Hoskin-Elliott and Thomas have played all three games so far this season, combining for two goals between them.

The Magpies host the injury-hit Giants at the MCG on Saturday night.
