Should Panthers forward chase big-money contract or put club success first?

2021-04-21T11:30+10:00

The Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs are reportedly chasing out of contract Penrith forward Kurt Capewell.

Bulldogs coach Trent Barrett left the Panthers last year to take up the head role at Canterbury and is intent on bringing over players he worked with under Ivan Cleary.

Capewell becomes the latest Panther to be targeted by the Bulldogs after they secured the signature of promising playmaker Matt Burton and engaged in talks with centre Brent Naden.

Capewell, 27, made his State of Origin debut last year for Queensland and it is believed the Bulldogs will be able to offer him a more lucrative deal than the Panthers.

As a result, Sydney Morning Herald journalist Andrew Webster believes Capewell must decide whether to prioritise money or team success when making his decision.

“I know Canterbury are after (Kurt) Capewell at the moment,” Webster said on SEN 1170 Breakfast.

“His career has gone through the roof at Penrith.

“He might get a big deal at Canterbury, but he’s going to be at a club that’s rebuilding for the next five years.”

Webster feels that Capewell could be pressured by his management to take the better offer, but urged him to do what’s best for his career.

“Does he really want to go there? You’ve got to weigh it up,” Webster added.

“Don’t listen to your manager who’s saying, ‘Take all this money’, the only reason the manager is saying that is because he wants his percentage.”

Capewell has also been linked to the Broncos as Kevin Walters looks to make a splash in the free-agency market.
