Why Geelong is a “big watch” ahead of West Coast clash

2021-04-22T11:06+10:00

Geelong haven’t quite been at their fluent best in 2021.

Three scrappy wins over Brisbane, Hawthorn and North Melbourne has the Cats sitting in eighth spot with plenty of scope for improvement.

Chris Scott’s side are yet to kick over 100 points and are lacking synergy forward of centre.

Geelong will now be without Patrick Dangerfield "indefinitely" with the club sending the superstar midfielder in for surgery to repair a syndesmosis injury in his right ankle.

“I don’t think we’re in love with the way we’re going,” Scott told reporters after last week’s win over the Kangaroos.

“We’ve got some hard games coming up, I hope the execution improves. We’ve just got some things that aren’t quite in sync at the moment.

“Hopefully when we get a bit more consistency with our personnel, it’ll start to marry up with the things that we’re working on during the week.”

Jordan Lewis says Geelong’s connection problems are fixable with star recruit Jeremy Cameron set to partner Tom Hawkins in attack for the first time this season against West Coast on Saturday.

Lewis thinks the Cats’ ball movement is a “big watch” this weekend in light of Scott’s comments regarding their execution.

“Paddy Dangerfield will go down as a future Hall of Famer, so he’ll be missed,” Lewis told SEN Breakfast.

“I think their issues are deeper than that. I think the inclusion of (Brandan) Parfitt on the weekend, he’s not a massive name when we talk about the superstars of the competition, but he’s a two-way runner and a really integral part of their midfield mix, adds depth.

“If they can get (Jeremy) Cameron back and Parfitt’s playing well … I think they’ve got some good depth. They’ve got a defensive structure that’s solid, their forwards need to work better together.

“But for me, their issues are going inside forward 50, that can be fixed. If they can clean up those skill errors around the ground, they can become more potent forward, and just look for different avenues going forward.

“The amount of times they kicked to Tom Hawkins on the weekend where they had other options if they just had have looked up or looked sideways stood out.

“Geelong is a big watch this weekend in terms of how they move the ball.”

The Cats host the Eagles at GMHBA Stadium with both clubs sharing a 3-2 win-loss record.
