The "mature chat" GWS should have on club captaincy

2021-04-27T07:52+10:00

GWS’ rise in form across the last few weeks has coincided with having Toby Greene at the helm as captain, with Stephen Coniglio injured on the sidelines.

Greene has been in electric form on the field, kicking 4.1 against the Bulldogs, a wayward 1.7 against Sydney and 5.1 against Collingwood as one of the game’s premier forwards.

David King believes Coniglio, Greene and the Giants need to have a mature conversation about the future of the club’s captaincy and who should be in charge.

“Every decision you make at a football club is for the betterment of the football club,” King told SEN Breakfast.

“If you’re Stephen Coniglio and you’re watching what is happening and you’re seeing what Toby Greene is doing and the impact it is having on the group.

“He is their centre of influence, isn’t he. He’s their most critical member. Emotionally, he has a connection with every player on that list, you can see it and feel it.

“If Coniglio sees what we all see, he walks in and says ‘you know what, this is probably the best decision for the footy club’.

“I don’t know whether Toby wants it, but if he does, I think it’s something you can have a mature conversation about.

“He looks like a captain, the way he plays is ‘come with me boys, I’ll show you the way’.

“Luke Hodge and Sam Mitchell style. It doesn’t mean you’re a lesser individual. It really doesn’t mean that at all. I think it’s a mature chat you can have.”

King doesn’t have an issue with Greene’s quirks, including his lengthy MRO rap-sheet and injury issues.

“That’s okay. Captains get suspended all the time,” he said.

“We had Wayne Carey and I think he’s the best captain I’ve seen for some time.

“He got suspended a lot in the early days.”

Coniglio has struggled form wise since taking on the captaincy at the start of 2020 and may be freed up without the burden.

He is currently on the sidelines with a syndesmosis injury suffered in Round 3.

The Giants take on Adelaide on Saturday afternoon.
