AFL umpires’ boss comments on McCartney's outburst, Neale’s fine

2021-04-30T09:37+10:00

AFL Head of Umpiring Dan Richardson says there’s “no excuse” for coaches, players and officials to approach umpires mid-match.

It comes after the AFL slapped GWS with a $20,000 fine following Jason McCartney's confrontation with the umpires at half-time of last week’s match against the Western Bulldogs.

McCartney, the Giants football boss, was not happy with the lopsided free-kick count that heavily favoured the Bulldogs.

“I don’t think we should underestimate the impact that the elite level has on community level football footy, regardless of whether it’s umpiring, players and coaches,” Richardson told SEN Breakfast.

“At AFL level we need to lead the way and there’s no doubt that has an impact at community levels.

“The rules are pretty clear, there’s no excuse to approach umpires, I think Jase (McCartney) and the Giants really owned this and accepted responsibility.

“In the end, I think the right outcome was reached and we really need to set a strong example and strong stance around approaching umpires.”

Richardson is comfortable with the Match Review Officer’s decision to fine Brisbane star Lachie Neale $1500 for making unnecessary contact with an umpire.

Neale brushed the arm of umpire Matthew Nicholls after copping an accidental knee to the face during last week's win over Carlton.

“That one was assessed more by the MRO. Players are well aware that it’s not acceptable to unnecessarily make contact with umpires,” Richardson said.

“That was assessed accordingly, and I think the right outcome was reached for all concerned.”
