Who are the seven best multi-position players in the AFL?

2021-05-04T09:42+10:00

Former Fremantle star Paul Hasleby has named who he believes are the seven best multi-position players in the AFL.

These are players who start in one primary position, but can be shifted somewhere else mid-game to fill a need.

This comes following Oscar Allen’s important role in the Derby, going into defence to shut down Matt Taberner.

The Eagles were without reliable defenders Jeremy McGovern, Tom Barrass and Shannon Hurn in the win on Sunday.

7. Tim English (Western Bulldogs)

“He’s improved his game this year. Stefan Martin has come in and played a role in the ruck,” Hasleby told Sportsday WA.

“He’s been a very good forward, but he can still go on-ball and have a big impact.”

6. Marlion Pickett (Richmond)

“His ability to play on the wing, he can play inside mid, he can play half back, he can play forward, we’ve seen him recently playing in the ruck as well and he has held his own in some of those centre bounces.”

5. Shane Edwards (Richmond)

“He’s one of the best players in the competition and super consistent.”

“He can play back, he can play midfield, he can play forward and kicks goals. He does everything for the Tigers.”

4. Dustin Martin (Richmond)

“It’s another Tiger. He’s the best player in the competition because of his ability to do it as an inside mid, outside mid, but then go forward at key moments in the game and be so good on the scoreboard and more importantly setting up goals.”

3. Mark Blicavs (Geelong)

“He started as a wingman, they’ve thrown him into the ruck and into defence and is an outstanding defender.”

2. Oscar Allen (West Coast)

“I thought it changed the momentum of the game, Oscar Allen going into defence and shutting down Matt Taberner.”

“He’s kicked 16 goals this year and played in the ruck and on the weekend he was influential in defence.”

1. Cale Hooker (Essendon)

“He’s kicked 21 goals for the year and been one of the competition’s best defenders for years.”

“He’s played all his football as a forward and been terrific.”
