Cornes names his Top 5 players in the AFL right now

2021-05-07T10:46+10:00

Kane Cornes has ranked his Top 5 players in the AFL as it stands.

The Port Adelaide games record holder and premiership player had teased the topic earlier in the week when he suggested GWS star Toby Greene is a top-five player in the competition.

Cornes explained the genesis of his selections on SEN’s The Captain’s Run.

“You sort of casually speak about it and I said I reckon he’s a top-five player in the game. It was put on social media and everyone loses their mind,” Cornes said.

“They agree or disagree, that’s the way it works. I think he genuinely is a top-five player. I’m not walking away from those comments.

“It’s not an easy exercise to do, but right now if you’re going to do it, the top five players in the game for me are...”

Kane’s Top 5

1. Dustin Martin
2. Marcus Bontempelli
3. Christian Petracca
4. Patrick Dangerfield
5. Toby Greene
Honourable mention: Max Gawn

Cornes gave some insight into why he made some of the selections that he did.

“People are saying I didn’t want to give Petracca a seven-year deal. No, I still take nothing away from his football. I think he’s been unbelievable,” he added.

“And it’s hard to do it when you’ve got injured players. I think Dangerfield is a top-five player in the game, so I’ve put him in there. I know he’s injured.

“Recency bias, you lose it, but this time last year what Dangerfield was doing forward and in the midfield was top five.

“I’ve kept Dangerfield in there and Greene, perhaps with a shoutout to Max Gawn who could replace Dangerfield if you had an injury clause in there.”
