Explosive Jack wins South Australian Derby in style

2021-05-08T16:50+10:00

Ciaron Maher and David Eustace trained galloper Explosive Jack has won its third Derby, running away from them in the South Australian Derby at Morphettville.

The star three-year-old becomes the first horse in 49 years to win Derbies in three Australian states.

With John Allen in the saddle, Explosive Jack also won the Listed Tasmanian Derby and the Group 1 ATC Derby at Randwick before claiming a second win at the elite level.

Speaking with Racing.com after the race, Maher hinted that the horse might head north for a crack at the Queensland Derby in early June.

"He's a tough horse. That term probably gets used a bit loosely, but he's got a great temperament and the team has managed him really well," said Maher.

"He's been to all our locations (stables) and you never know, he might end up in Queensland yet."

Irish jockey Allen notched up his third SA Derby after winning in 2016 on Howard Be Thy Name and Russian Camelot in 2020.

"I love being here, I have good luck when I come here. I love riding on the big track and it gives every horse a good crack at the race,” he said on Racing.com.

"I've just been lucky enough to get on the right horses."

The winners continue for the Maher/Eustace team following a huge week at the Warrnambool Carnival. They also saddled up Generation in the opener at Caulfield.
