Former star Richmond defender Alex Rance has responded to rumours of a potential comeback to AFL football, saying his decision to retire was “the best decision I ever made”.
The 31-year-old, who was part of the Tigers’ 2017 premiership-winning side, retired at the end of 2019 after a season where he tore his ACL against Carlton in Round 1.
Rumours of a potential return to the AFL haven’t gone away since his shock retirement two years ago, but Rance moved to clarify speculation on the Dyl & Friends podcast.
“There’s always still a part of me which loves football and it’s the best job in the world being an AFL player, it’s so fun. But it comes at a cost,” he said.
“Retirement for me was looking at all of the chips on the table and saying, what do I really want, what are my priorities now.
“There are plenty of days where I think I have made the wrong decision.
“But I look at the relationship I have with my nephews now and it’s the best decision I have made in my life.”
Rance recently confirmed he would play several games of amateur football this year for Perth Football League C2-Grade side Swan Valley.
