How Gold Coast can “counterpunch” St Kilda interest in Ben King

2021-05-13T08:36+10:00

The Gold Coast Suns should “get aggressive” if they want to keep Ben King at the club, according to Garry Lyon.

A recent report from Jay Clark in the Herald Sun is indicating that St Kilda is “expected to launch a massive bid to poach” Ben from the Suns and unite him with twin brother Max at Moorabbin.

It is understood that the Saints are eager to lure Ben at the end of next season when his contract with the Suns expires.

This is not the first time the Saints have been linked to Max’s sibling and in a bid to ward off the interest, Lyon believes the Suns should fight fire with fire.

“If you’re the Gold Coast Suns, you counterpunch today,” Lyon said on SEN Breakfast.

“I’m not doubting Jay’s article, let’s assume that it’s right.

“But today you’re counterpunching (if you’re the Suns). You’re ringing up Max King’s manager (Robbie D’Orazio) and you’re going, ‘I want it on the record that we want Max up here with Ben’.

“Gold Coast Suns, get aggressive and try to get the St Kilda bloke up to Gold Coast.”

The 20-year-old King pair have played together in the past for junior club East Sandringham, NAB League side Sandringham Dragons, at school level with Haileybury College and for the Vic Metro team.

Both Ben and Max are out of contract at their respective clubs at the end of 2022.

Ben is enjoying a fruitful season with the Gold Coast, returning 23 goals from eight games, while Max has kicked 12 goals (13 behinds) in seven games for the Saints in 2021.
