Should North Melbourne receive a priority pick?

2021-05-12T10:37+10:00

North Melbourne looks destined to claim this year’s wooden spoon.

The Kangaroos are yet to win a game in 2021 and have won just three of their past 25 matches – their last victory came in August last year.

A 15-man injury list has made first-year coach David Noble’s task even more difficult with a long rebuild ahead.

Speaking on SEN’s Bob and Andy, Julian De Stoop, Andy Maher and Bob Murphy discussed whether bottom-placed North Melbourne should receive a priority pick.

De Stoop: “Should they (North Melbourne) apply for a priority pick?”

Maher: “Apply? No problems.”

De Stoop: “Should they get one?”

Maher: “No, they shouldn’t.”

Murphy: “Why not?”

Maher: “Because this is their own doing. They can apply, but they aren’t getting it.

“Because if they get it then the next club does exactly the same thing and if it’s good for North, it has to be good for them.

“This is not me being meanspirited towards North but this is their own doing, they decided that this was the road they wanted to go down. So, no.”

North Melbourne delisted 11 players and traded star duo Ben Brown and Shaun Higgins at the end of last year.

Brisbane successfully applied for a priority selection in 2016 after three consecutive bottom four finishes.

Gold Coast also received a rescue package from the AFL that included multiple priority selections in 2019.
