Cold water poured over sensational Sandilands return

2021-05-14T08:59+10:00

David Mundy admits it would be a massive surprised if Aaron Sandilands were to sensationally come out of retirement.

A report from AFL Media’s Damian Barrett emerged this week that the former Fremantle ruckman, who retired from the game in 2019, was the subject of interest from a Victorian club.

It was speculated that Carlton and Geelong were the clubs showing interest in Sandilands ahead of the mid-season draft.

However, that has since been knocked on the head.

Triple M’s Lachy Reid revealed that he had spoken to Sandilands’ management and there is no desire for him to return to football at the age of 38.

"Talk this morning Aaron Sandilands may be picked up in the mid season draft… I spoke to his (Sandilands’) manager earlier today and asked the question," Reid said on his Triple M Rush Hour WA show on Thursday.

"His manager said there was interest, a club had notified him and asked about it, and he said to Aaron Sandilands ‘what do you reckon?’, and Aaron Sandilands said 'nuh'.

"‘I've moved on from footy, I'm happy doing my role at the Fremantle Dockers’."

Former Dockers teammate Mundy added to that doubt, saying it was unlikely the part-time Freo ruck coach would be back playing anytime soon.

“I live around the corner from him and I can tell you he’s really comfortable where he is,” Mundy said on SEN Breakfast.

“I’d be very, very surprised if he came back.

“If he did, I’d love to play with him again, he’s a fantastic ruckman.”

Mundy also commented on reports that clubs in Melbourne are trying to get their hands on young Victorian midfielder Adam Cerra.

“Yeah, and for good reason. He’s turning himself into a really fantastic player,” Mundy said of the interest.

“We can only judge him on what he does over here I guess. He’s really dedicated to his craft, with the relationships he’s forged over here with our playing group, and he’s a real pleasure to play with.

“If we can keep all those guys (including Caleb Serong and Andrew Brayshaw) together, they’ll be the next wave of their Fremantle football team so hopefully this year and the years to come they are really taking over and driving our group forward.”

Mundy, who is in career-best form, and the Dockers meet Essendon at Marvel Stadium on Sunday as they strive to improve their record to 5-4.
