North Melbourne youngster comes in for huge praise

2021-05-13T15:53+10:00

North Melbourne youngster Tom Powell has been a shining light in what has been a tough year for the club.

The 19-year-old midfielder has been ultra-consistent in his debut season and is yet to miss a game.

Powell is ranked No.2 for disposals and effective disposals, No.2 for goal assists and No.4 for contested possessions out of all the teenagers currently in the AFL.

A Rising Star nomination looms for the talented ball-winner who continues to impress for the winless Kangaroos.

St Kilda champion Leigh Monatgna lavished the young Roo with some huge praise.

“I just want to give a bit of love to young Tom Powell. I’ve seen the Kangaroos live a few times this year, this kid’s an absolute beauty,” Montagna told Fox Footy’s AFL 360.

“In a year where the Rising Star is wide open because there’s no Matt Rowell … he looks about 12 years old this kid, but he can seriously play.

“His hands are beautiful, he’s a good mover, he makes the right decisions. He’s playing for the worst team in the competition at the moment. He’s holding up his end of the bargain really well.

“I just think this kid has got a future Brownlow Medallist written all over him. I think the way that he plays, he’s a massive accumulator of the footy, he’s going to get 30-plus touches every week.

“He’s getting better with every game this year. In a tough year for North Melbourne, the supporters should go along to the footy to watch a kid like that, because he’s a beauty.”

North Melbourne selected Powell with the 13th pick overall in the 2020 National Draft.
