Fringe Tiger makes huge VFL statement, premiership midfielder stars

2021-05-15T18:45+10:00

Fringe Tiger tall Callum Coleman-Jones has given Damien Hardwick a timely reminder of his talents, leading Richmond to a 97-point thrashing of an inexperienced GWS outfit in today’s VFL clash at Punt Road Oval.

The 21-year-old 200cm ruck-forward booted five goals including the first two of the match and finished with 19 disposals, 16 hitouts and seven marks in a dominant display.

The South Australian product is out of contract and is reportedly being courted by other clubs.

He has not featured at AFL level since his debut in round 10, 2019, partly due to a 10-game ban he and Sydney Stack were handed for a late-night incident while in the Gold Coast hub last year.

Premiership utility Josh Caddy starred with two goals and 32 disposals in his first match in three weeks.

Others to put their hand up for senior selection were young midfield duo Will Martyn (28 disposals) and Thomson Dow (27 disposals), while Derek Eggmolesse-Smith (27 disposals, 9 marks) excelled in his role across half back.

Stack made his fourth appearance of the season at VFL level and looked back to his dynamic back, finishing with two goals, 18 disposals and seven tackles.

Meanwhile, Mabior Chol (18 disposals, 22 hitouts, 7 marks and a goal) took the points against a weakened GWS ruck brigade.

On a tough day for the Giants, Category B rookie Will Shaw’s long-range running goal was a rare highlight, while midfielder Nick Shipley (24 disposals) battled hard inside.
