"A great, a legend, a true Immortal": Voss pays tribute to the late Bob Fulton

The rugby league community is mourning the death of Bob Fulton after he passed away on Sunday aged 74 following a long battle with cancer.

The Manly great was one of the initial four post-war Immortals and was named in Australia’s team of the century in 2008 after a remarkable career.

SEN host Andrew Voss has paid tribute to the icon, describing him as one of the game’s greatest ever.

“A very sad day for rugby league and indeed for Australian sport yesterday with the passing on Bob Fulton at age 74,” Voss said on SEN 1170 Breakfast.

“His early rugby league he played for the Wests club in the Illawarra competition, his climb through the ranks was rapid from the moment he was picked to play for Country seconds.

“The Manly club identified his talent, and he came to the big smoke in 1966 and then it all started to happen in a very short space of time.

“Just two years later, Bob Fulton is captain of the side that plays in the 1968 Grand Final, he was just 21 at the time, incredible.

“In the same year, he played for Australia for the first time.

“Everyone who knows the Bob Fulton story will tell you he was ahead of his time.

“He didn’t just have the natural talent few are afforded; he was an athlete who trained in a way that was superior to others in his era.

“A work ethic to be the best, and he was the best – speed, vision, toughness, strength, balance, an ability to turn the game, his will to win was second to none.

“I will highlight his greatness through just one game – the 1973 Grand Final – this is recorded in history, and few argue, as the most brutal, bordering on violent Grand Final’s of all time, Manly v Cronulla.

“In the midst of that battle, the skills and talent of Fulton shone like a beacon. He scored both of Manly’s tries, in that premiership triumph.

“Sometimes accolades and describing a sports star can go over the top, it is certainly not in the case with what Bob Fulton achieved in his life in rugby league as both player and coach.

“A great, a legend, a true Immortal. Bob Fulton, rest in peace.”
