Should McKay have stood up for felled Blues teammate?

2021-05-25T11:25+10:00

Andy Maher and Bob Murphy both believe Carlton forward Harry McKay should have stood up for teammate Sam Walsh after he was elbowed in the face by Hawthorn defender Kyle Hartigan.

Hartigan was handed a three-week suspension after fan footage emerged on social media of him elbowing Walsh off the ball late in Saturday’s match.

McKay didn’t react to Hartigan’s strike which felled Walsh deep inside Carlton’s attacking 50.

Maher and Murphy discussed McKay’s non-reaction to Hartigan’s hit on SEN’s Bob and Andy.

Maher: “He’s my favourite player Harry McKay. I love him.

“He has not got a nasty bone in his body. He should have remonstrated, he should have.

“That was a moment just to grab Hartigan by the scruff of the neck, don’t throw him or do anything that’s out of character.”

Murphy: “Sam Walsh needed to know that the biggest bloke on his team was there to protect him.”

Maher: “Walsh has come 40 metres to lay a block on Hartigan so Harry could make a lead, so all Walsh is doing in that case was thinking about Harry McKay.

“Now it’s not Harry’s go, it’s not who he is, but just stand up for the little bloke.”

Murphy: “David Teague should show that.”

Maher: “I hope they do, and I hope Harry says, ‘that’s on me boys, I’ll be better next time’.”

McKay and Walsh’s teammate Lachie Plowman was handed a two-match ban for engaging in rough conduct during Saturday’s 23-point win.

The Blues will appeal Plowman’s suspension at the Tribunal on Tuesday night.
