AFLPA CEO throws support behind Tasmanian expansion

2021-05-26T14:08+10:00

AFL Players' Association CEO Paul Marsh supports the expansion of the competition to include a Tasmanian team.

The league is currently reviewing the case for a team in Tassie, with a decision expected at the latest in early 2022.

“I think if we’re going to be truly a national competition then Tasmania should be part of that conversation for sure,” Marsh told SEN’s Dwayne’s World.

“There are certainly some hurdles to jump over introducing any new teams, but I know the group that is putting this together for Tasmania is doing a hell of a lot of work in this space.

“I’ve certainly had some chats to the group over time as well as Colin Carter who’s doing the review at the moment and have expressed our views.

“We’re absolutely open to there being a team in Tassie at the right time. I think there’s a strong chance it will happen.

“I think if we have this vision to be a truly national sport then Tasmania’s got to be a part of that. It really comes down to whether they can build a sustainable business model for a team down there and I know that’s the work they’re doing at the moment.”

The push for a team in Tasmania has been strong in the last 12 months, with a Taskforce put in place to lead the charge.
