Hubs "back on the agenda" as the AFL scrambles to put on Round 11

2021-05-27T07:13+10:00

With the likelihood today of Victoria entering another snap lockdown, the AFL is scrambling to ensure Round 11 goes ahead.

Carlton and Essendon have already flown out of the state for their games, while Hawthorn is expected to follow, should their game with Gold Coast be rescheduled.

Richmond versus Adelaide remains up in the air, with South Australia slamming their border to Victoria shut.

Veteran journalist Caroline Wilson gave an update on where things sat on Footy Classified on Wednesday night.

“I think if the AFL had their choice they would move at least two Victorian clubs up to Sydney for the next few weeks, but there’s a facilities problem there obviously. Probably a bigger problem there than in Tasmania where I don’t think there are any games scheduled this weekend,” Wilson said.

“I would predict they’re trying to move Richmond versus Adelaide to Sunday at GIANTS Stadium.

“The AFL are anticipating a lockdown announcement tomorrow. They are trying to now, having postponed the Hawthorn versus Gold Coast game in Darwin, trying to put that back on again somewhere over the weekend.

“New South Wales remains the number one priority for the AFL.”

Hubs in New South Wales, Queensland and even Tasmania could come into play very quickly.

“Today the CEOs were all told that hubs are very much back on the agenda. They are looking at hubs in New South Wales and Queensland, but Tasmania’s role is intriguing,” Wilson added.

“Colin Carter doing that big report on behalf of the AFL. He’s been over there anyway.

“They’re trying to get a team in Tasmania, this is the perfect opportunity for Tasmania to showcase what a wonderful place they are to host AFL footy.”

Former Collingwood president Eddie McGuire has spoken to the AFL, who have said altering the current fixture is “the worst case scenario”.

“They want to keep the schedule of the game going,” McGuire added.
