Report: Round 11 fixture to be postponed as a result of Victoria's COVID outbreak

2021-05-26T20:07+10:00

Hawthorn’s Round 11 match against Gold Coast at TIO Stadium in Darwin has been postponed, according to Fox Footy’s Tom Morris.

As a result of the rapidly evolving COVID situation in Victoria, Hawthorn were exploring their options to charter a flight to ensure the game was able to go ahead, but it appears they’ve been unsuccessful in their bid to play.

Both the Hawks and Suns will now have a bye in Round 11, instead of Round 12 as previously scheduled.

“I’ve been told that both teams have been told that this game will be postponed and neither will play on the weekend,” Tom Morris told Sportsday on Wednesday night.

“The Hawks were trying to leave today either straight to Darwin or via Queensland and now Northern Territory are shutting the border so they can’t get in the state to play the game.”

The match – which was originally scheduled to be played on Saturday night – will be rescheduled later in the season.

Both the MCG and Marvel Stadium were named as exposure sites by the Victorian Department of Heath as a result of positive cases attending respective matches in Round 10.

As first reported by SEN Chief Sports Reporter Sam Edmund, Victorian-based AFL clubs were earlier on Wednesday placed into a seven-day lockdown as a precuation.
