Two big questions loom over Celtic’s pursuit of Postecoglou

2021-06-03T12:27+10:00

Former Socceroos coach Ange Postecoglou has emerged as the favourite to become Celtic’s next manager after discussions with ex-Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe broke down.

Postecoglou, the current coach of J-League club Yokohama F. Marinos, is reportedly in advanced talks to take charge of the Scottish Giants who are coming off a turbulent campaign.

Celtic finished 25 points behind ritter rivals Rangers in the title race and parted ways with Neil Lennon in February with Postecoglou rumoured to be his replacement in the top job.

If appointed, will the Australian be given enough time to implement his attacking philosophy and how will he handle the heightened scrutiny from the Scottish press?

Former Premier League midfielder Spencer Prior discussed Celtic’s pursuit of Postecoglou.

“He’s going to need time because it typically takes a year to cement in (ideas) and the second year is when you really see what he can bring,” Prior told 1170 SEN’s The Global Game.

“The question is will he get time?

“The other thing is will he be able to deal with the Scottish media that are not going to give him time. They gave Neil Lennon a lot of time over two spells, but Lennon probably deserved that as a club legend as a player as well.

“Everybody thought Eddie Howe was going to get it, he’s done an incredible job with Bournemouth in the EPL before.

“Everyone thought he was going to get it and that’s why I feel there’s a bit of a push against Ange. I think his style would be very, very refreshing.”

Many Celtic fans and former players are worried about Postecoglou's lack of European experience with a brief stint with Panachaiki in the Greek third division his only previous job on the continent.

The 55-year-old has a wealth of domestic experience in Australia and Japan as well as at international level with the Socceroos.
