Ross Lyon reveals his level of interest in Collingwood and prospective Carlton coaching roles

2021-06-10T07:04+10:00

Former St Kilda and Fremantle coach Ross Lyon has given his position on both the vacant Collingwood coaching job and what his hypothetical thoughts would be on the same role at Carlton.

The Magpies and Nathan Buckley mutually parted ways on Wednesday, opening up the enormous role.

Lyon told Footy Classified he would give the Magpies job “serious consideration”.

"They're one of the biggest clubs in the land, incredible tradition, enormous," Lyon said.

"If someone rang me from Collingwood and said, 'can we talk?', of course I would sit down and have the discussion.

"I can't give you a flippant answer here. I'd locked the key on it (AFL coaching) and (have been) trying to make the best of a new career at a property investment house and Channel Nine and Triple M.

"For me, it's such a big position. Nathan Buckley is a revered figure; we saw how he handled it and he still got chewed up and spat out.

"It's not a flippant response, it needs serious consideration, there's lots of variables and they're a big, powerful club."

Journalist Sam McClure believes Lyon would be “the number one candidate” if Carlton moves on from David Teague.

Lyon said he would take the Blues’ call as well.

"It's not a simple, flippant, 'yeah, I'm interested', because they are big jobs and they need someone who's unconditional, committed," he said.

"If Alastair Clarkson's available, there is no competition: just pull out whatever he needs, have the conversation and get him signed."

On the rumours that he would not take the Carlton job because of the ugly situation between the Blues and his close friend Stephen Silvagni, Lyon said he hadn’t considered the thought.

“The right principle is an AFL club rings you, you show the respect they deserve, and that’s my position,” he said.

Teague is contracted for 2022 and has been assured of his job by current club president Mark LoGuidice.

Luke Sayers will take over as Carlton president next season and he is currently undergoing a review of the football department.
