The gettable star midfielders who would and would not fit Port Adelaide in 2022

2021-06-09T17:11+10:00

Port Adelaide will likely target established midfielders in the upcoming trade period, needing to add depth next to Ollie Wines and Travis Boak.

Tom Mitchell is a player who may be available, given reports earlier in the week indicated he would be willing to move on from Hawthorn if it was mutually beneficial.

Kane Cornes however doesn’t see the 2018 Brownlow Medallist as a good fit alongside Boak and Wines.

“Is Tom Mitchell a fit at Port Adelaide? They have been linked to Zach Merrett and absolutely need more midfield support,” Cornes told SEN SA Breakfast.

“Comparing the midfield Geelong will roll out there tomorrow night to Port Adelaide’s and it’s chalk and cheese.

“My view on it is he’s probably not suited to Port Adelaide’s midfield. He’d be expensive. I think Port has the cash. They must if they’re going after Merrett.

“I just don’t think he compliments what they’ve already got in there. Boak and Wines and Mitchell. They are three inside players.

“The ideal one for Port is Merrett who’s tough in the contest, but can also break some lines and crafty with his ball-use.

“Tom Mitchell, not for me.

“Not saying he’s not a great player, but at Port Adelaide it’s probably a no for me.”

As for who the Power should target and who would compliment their midfield, Cornes sees St Kilda’s Jack Billings as a potential target.

“Jack Billings was a high draft pick, is clearly skilful, has absolutely not reached his full potential at the Saints,” Cornes said.

“He probably fits what Port Adelaide needs in terms of midfield, can go forward, can score. I would argue he’s gettable.

“It’s easier to play well in a better side.”

Billings is currently out of contract and previously suggested he was in no rush to re-sign with the Saints.
