The changes Queensland should consider for Origin II

2021-06-10T12:20+10:00

There will almost certainly be changes to Queensland’s Origin side after they were thumped by 44 points in the series opener on Wednesday night.

New South Wales’ star studded backline did as they pleased to score eight tries with Queensland helpless to their onslaught with current personnel.

With new players potentially becoming available before Game 2 at Suncorp Stadium, The Daily Telegraph’s Michael Carayannis was asked who he’d bring in if he were Maroons coach Paul Green.

“I think two stand out for me,” Carayannis said on SEN 1170 Breakfast.

“Josh Papalii will come back into the side somewhere and add a bit of steel in the middle of the field.

“They lost Christian Welch early and he’s probably been one of the two or three best front rowers in the NRL so that hurt.

“Papalii will come in, and I think Ben Hunt needs to be somewhere in that side.

“Harry Grant looked totally gassed, they would have had the option of Hunt on the bench to play a bit of nine so I think he had to be there.

“Potentially Kalyn Ponga somewhere as well.

“(Kurt) Capewell’s got to move to the forwards, that’ll stiffen them up, bring Ben Hunt in, hopefully Ponga’s ready and you bring in Papalii as well.

“Outside of that, I don’t think you’d be making too many other changes.”

Origin II is set for Sunday, June 27, at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane.
