Report: AFL investigating circumstances that led to young Hawk's boxing concussion

2021-06-13T16:10+10:00

The AFL is reportedly set to investigate the boxing incident that left Hawthorn forward Mitchell Lewis concussed and unable to play on Friday night against Sydney.

The Herald Sun’s Marc McGowan is reporting that Hawks coach Alastair Clarkson stopped a boxing session on Monday to demand his players “go harder at each other”.

It is believed that the players were boxing in pairs and weren’t wearing head gear, with McGowan writing that there’s supposedly footage of young Hawk Jacob Koschitzke delivering a blow to the head that knocked Lewis out.

The news comes after Hawks assistant Craig McRae told AFL Nation on Friday that the session involved just “body punches” with the blow coming as Lewis ducked into an oncoming fist.

Hawthorn have reportedly now told News Corp that the AFL would look into the circumstances leading to Lewis’ injury, but remained steadfast that the incident was merely an accident.

Lewis entered the AFL’s 12-day concussion protocol on Monday and will be available to play against Essendon next Sunday if he passes the necessary hurdles.
