New Zealand seals historic Test victory over England

2021-06-14T11:00+10:00

New Zealand have sealed a third consecutive series victory over England and a first on English soil since 1999, having cruised to an eight wicket win at Edgbaston last night.

The hosts led by just 38 runs as the sun rose over Birmingham on Day 4, and towering tailender Olly Stone (15) surrendered his wicket to Kiwi seamer Trent Boult (2/34) with the first delivery of the morning.

After a century on debut in the first Test and having holed out to square leg on 80 in the first innings, Devon Conway (3) nicked off early in the chase. Will Young (8) soon joined him in the sheds, throwing hands at Stone (1-5) and dragging the delivery onto his stumps.

Opener Tom Latham (23) made short work of the target, however. The New Zealand captain plundered eight runs off Mark Wood’s only five balls, bringing up the win with a deft touch off the square, down to the third man rope.

Earlier, Conway, Young (82) and former captain Ross Taylor (80) raised the bat to guide the visitors to an 85-run first innings lead, before Matt Henry (3-36), Trent Boult (2-34), Neil Wagner (3-18) and Ajaz Patel (2-25) shared the wickets in an evisceration of the English.

Having rested several stars, New Zealand will be buoyed by the strength of the performance with the World Test Championship final looming next Friday.

Kane Williamson, BJ Watling, allrounder Colin de Grandhomme and bowlers Tim Southee and Kyle Jamieson will all be available for the showdown with India at the Ageas Bowl after sitting this Test out.
