Veteran Blue shines, mid-season draft recruit injured in VFL win

2021-06-19T16:15+10:00

Veteran Blue Marc Murphy has responded in style against Port Melbourne in the VFL on Saturday after be dropped this week, but the day was soured following mid-season draft recruit Alex Mirkov’s knee injury.

Murphy collected 26 touches, seven marks and three tackles in Carlton’s VFL win at North Port Oval and could have hardly done much more as he presses for an immediate recall to the senior side.

The news wasn’t as good for Markov, with the ruckman finishing the game with ice on his knee after going down with the injury in the opening term.

Sam Petrevski-Seton found plenty of the footy, while VFL-listed former Cat James Parsons kicked two majors.

It was also a good day for Josh Honey – who kicked three goals – as he looks to find his way into the senior side for the first time this year.

The game remained close throughout, with the Blues coming from behind in the final term to win by 15 points.

Former Saint Eli Templeton was best afield, dominating with 47 disposals, 13 marks and two goals for the Borough.

The contest marked Carlton and Port Melbourne’s return to VFL action after several weeks off as a result of Victoria’s COVID outbreak.
