Brereton: “Recidivist fumbler” is costing Carlton

2021-06-21T18:19+10:00

Hawthorn great Dermot Brereton says Sam Docherty’s fumbling in defence is costing Carlton at the moment.

The Blues co-captain fumbled a loose ball deep in defence that led to a GWS goal from Josh Kelly late in Saturday night's match, snuffing out any hope of a late Carlton comeback.

“His fumbling is chronic,” Brereton told SEN Drive.

“I think he’s been a fantastic player. He’s a wonderful clubman.

“But he’s a fumbler - he’s a recidivist fumbler at the moment and it’s costing his team.

“His hands and his reaction time to gather and hold the ball is clearly failing him at this point.

“I hope it’s a confidence thing and his confidence grows somewhere along the line, and it comes back to him. But at the moment, he’s gullible for the opposition. He’s a gettable player.”

The Blues couldn’t handle star Giant Toby Greene who finished with four goals and 11 score involvements, firing his side to a 36-point win at Giants Stadium.

“What are you doing thinking that Nic Newman is going to shut him (Greene) down?” Brereton said.

“You’ve got (Adam) Saad that can run it out, you’ve got Nic Newman that can kick it – somebody’s got to defend.

“You’ve got to actually find the right players for the right position.”

David Teague's Blues (4-9) take on Adelaide (5-8) at Marvel Stadium on Sunday.
