Watson: “I was thinking about him yesterday about where best to play him, what position does he best serve in the team.

“For whatever reason, and maybe it’s his endurance, he’s not considered to be an inside midfielder, he was never considered a midfielder at GWS.

“He’s a forward-type player. I guess that’s got to be his role, a pressure forward-type player that kicks and sets up goals.

“He won the Essendon best and fairest in his first year at the club – he was unbelievable with his work rate and his pressure.”

Smith is contracted to the Bombers until the end of 2023.

The 28-year-old has kicked six goals and is averaging 13.8 disposals and 4.6 tackles per game this season.
