Socceroos star “the type of player” Postecoglou’s Celtic should target

Newly appointed Celtic coach Ange Postecoglou is looking to bolster his squad with new signings ahead of the upcoming season.

Socceroos star Aaron Mooy is “the type of player” Postecoglou should be looking to bring to Glasgow, according to former Scotland manager Alex McLeish.

Mooy, who has previously worked under ex-Socceroos coach Postecoglou, signed for Chinese Super League side Shanghai SIPG from Premier League club Brighton for a reported fee of £4 million last year.

Former Rangers boss McLeish thinks the 30-year-old would give Celtic’s midfield a new dimension.

“I saw them linked with Aaron Mooy. Did he start at Man City?” McLeish told Football Insider.

“Then he went to Huddersfield and then Brighton. He’s a terrific player and the type of player Celtic should be going for.

“He’s got energy to burn. Any time I’ve seen the guy, he’s very difficult to dispossess on the ball.

“I’m not saying he’s a dribbler but when he gets the ball and just when you think you’re going to tackle him, he’s already given it to somebody else. One of his teammates gets it and normally it’s a good pass.

“He is a guy with great football nous.”

Mooy was left out of Australia’s squad for recent World Cup qualifiers due to family reasons.

Postecoglou’s first competitive match in charge of Celtic is a two-legged Champions League qualifier against Danish club Midtjylland in July.

The Hoops failed to qualify for Europe’s top club competition last season.
