Brown puts hand up for senior recall with five-goal VFL haul

2021-06-27T15:25+10:00

Ben Brown has put his hand up for a senior recall with a bag of five goals in the VFL for Casey on Sunday.

The key forward’s big day helped the Demons to a 48-point win over Essendon at Casey Fields, extending the club’s unbeaten record to 6-0 in the state league this season.

Brown has played just three games since crossing over from North Melbourne in the off-season, with injury and poor form seeing Tom McDonald, Luke Jackson and Sam Weideman preferred ahead of him at times this year.

With the VFL postponed due to Victoria’s COVID lockdown last month, the game marked Brown’s first competitive outing in five weeks, his first chance to impress coach Simon Goodwin since May 23.

Brown was supported in attack by Jake Melksham (two goals, 22 disposals) and Weideman (21 diposals, one goal, 11 marks), while Nathan Jones (35 disposals, one goal) and Jake Bowey (27 disposals) found plenty of the ball.

For Essendon, Tom Cutler (31 disposals) and David Zaharakis (24 disposals) helped keep the Bombers in the contest before the Demons ran away with the game in the final term.

FINAL SCORE

Casey Demons: 1.2, 4.7, 7.11, 13.14. (92)

Essendon: 1.2, 2.4, 5.4, 6.8. (44)
