Cornes calls for rule change to be scrapped next season

2021-06-27T13:25+10:00

Kane Cornes has called for the stand rule to be scrapped before the 2022 AFL season.

The stand rule was introduced prior to this season with the player manning the mark unable to move laterally until the umpire calls "play on".

A 50-metre penalty applies to any player who moves off the mark after the umpire has called "stand".

The rule change was designed to increase scoring, quicken up the speed of games and guard against congestion.

“No team has kicked over 100 points to this stage in this round,” Cornes told AFL Media’s The Round So Far.

“I’m not sure it’s doing what it was designed to do, despite everyone lauding it in the first four rounds of the year.

“It’s just messy for the players, it’s too difficult for the umpires – I’d love to see that scrapped next year.”

Essendon youngster Archie Perkins conceded a costly 50-metre penalty for not manning the mark according to the rule during Saturday night’s loss to Melbourne.

“I’m not sure what else he (Perkins) could have done,” Cornes said.

“I thought he did everything right in terms of the letter of the law. He got into position and when the umpire said, “stand”, he stood.

“The first one (50m penalty) wasn’t there - what more could he have done? He has to actually stand the mark.”
