Eddie McGuire outlines his fresh fixture proposal amid COVID drama

2021-06-29T14:32+10:00

Eddie McGuire has floated a fixture proposal which would see all sides play each other once before a potential compression of the season would begin.

COVID outbreaks in Queensland, New South Wales and Western Australian has seen the AFL move four interstate clubs to Victoria ahead of Round 16.

McGuire, who was on the AFL’s coronavirus cabinet member last year, said it was imperative the AFL ensured all teams had played each other once, before looking at all options which include another footy frenzy and more games in Victoria.

“I was very strong earlier in the year and wanted to get the season away a month early," he said on SEN's Dwayne's World.

“I think the AFL will have to have a good look (at everthing )… if we get everyone into a semi hub (in Victoria), we need to get the games away where the teams haven’t played each other so getting everyone playing everyone at least once.

“Then after that, you can cut the cloth based on what’s going on. I think there’s probably three or rounds of footy where they haven’t played each other.

“If we knock that over quickly, then we can do what we want to. We can have 22 rounds and push it out further if you want to.

“If you want a festival of footy, then that’s something you can look at then. The players don’t mind playing off five or six-day breaks, but keeping them away from their families for a really long period of time is the thing no one wants to do.

Gold Coast’s home game against Richmond is likely to now be played at Marvel Stadium on Thursday night, while The Age reports that Fremantle’s clash against Carlton is a chance to take place in Tasmania.
