“It’s disappointing": Crows great “surprised” by father-son snub

Adelaide decided not to nominate Luke Edwards as a father-son selection in last year’s draft.

Edwards, the son of 321-game Crows great Tyson, was snapped up by West Coast with pick No.52 and has played three games in his first AFL season.

The 19-year-old midfielder gathered 15 disposals on debut in Round 12 against Carlton, before collecting a career-best 27 touches in the Eagles’ Round 13 win over Richmond.

Tyson Edwards, a dual Adelaide premiership player, admits he was “surprised” that his former club overlooked his son in the draft.

“I never had any concerns that he wouldn’t be OK at the level (AFL),” Edwards told SEN SA Breakfast.

“He’s always gone really well playing in the next level coming through juniors and getting an opportunity to play out of his age group and play against better players.

“He’s always enjoyed that, and I thought he’d be fine.

“We were surprised that the Crows decided not to select him. I would have loved for him to start his journey there like I had to the opportunity to do.

“It’s disappointing, but it’s his story and everything happens for a reason. He couldn’t be enjoying it any more over there at the moment to be honest.

“It’s worked out well. He’s in a good club getting looked after really well. I couldn’t be happier for him.”

Edwards was recently inducted into Adelaide’s Hall of Fame.
