Eagles champion tipped for senior coaching role

Jarrad McVeigh has backed fellow Sydney Swans assistant Dean Cox to take a top coaching job one day.

Cox is a highly regarded coach who has been with the Swans since late 2017 following a superb playing career with West Coast.

The 2006 premiership ruckman and six-time All-Australian has been honing his craft under John Longmire in preparation for the day when he is ready to take over his own side, according to McVeigh.

“He’s been fantastic for us,” McVeigh said on Sportsday WA.

“Really smart and great knowledge of the game.

“I think he’ll be a senior coach one day definitely. Whether that’s now or in the future, I’m not too sure.

“His nous around stoppages and his care for our younger players is really top notch.

“He’s got a great footy brain and he’s working on all the other types of stuff that coaching involves.

“I’m sure he’ll be a senior coach one day and hopefully for him it’s soon.”

Cox is one of a number of highly rated assistants working under Longmire, including former Adelaide coach Don Pyke as well as McVeigh and Ben Mathews.

He kicked off his coaching career with West Coast as a part-time ruck coach during his playing days before spending three seasons full-time under Adam Simpson.

The sixth-placed Swans are in action against Cox’s former club the Eagles at GMHBA Stadium in Geelong on Sunday.
