Lloyd names Bontempelli's biggest Brownlow challenger

2021-07-04T15:53+10:00

While Marcus Bontempelli is firming as the Brownlow medal favourite, Matthew Lloyd believes Port Adelaide midfielder Ollie Wines could “go really close” in the 2021 vote count.

Wines, 26, is in career best form in 2021, and was one of the Power’s best in their 34 point win over Hawthorn on Saturday night.

Speaking on Channel Nine’s Sunday Footy Show, Lloyd says he has Wines as a hot Brownlow chance to due his form and the fact that he’s standing out from his teammates.

“I know the favourite for the Brownlow is Marcus Bontempelli, but this guy could go really close – Ollie Wines,” Lloyd said.

“He’s just getting best on ground, week after week.

“I’m not sure who’s going to take votes off him with the way he’s playing.

“He had 43 disposals, 13 clearances and just gets the job done, week in week out.”

After struggling with poor form and injury in the last two seasons, club great Kane Cornes described Wines’ career resurgence as a “great story”.

“It’s a great story,” Cornes said.

“He’s had injury and he had the captaincy and it was taken off him.

“There was talk of (a move to) Carlton, he’s very close to his family in Victoria.

“He stayed loyal, and he’s now on a six-year deal, he’s going to be around for a very long time.”
