The club that makes "perfect sense" for Clarkson to enhance his "legacy"

2021-07-06T17:39+10:00

Following the news of Hawthorn's coaching succession plan, SEN host Andy Maher believes four-time premiership coach Alastair Clarkson would be an ideal fit at the Gold Coast Suns.

The Suns have had a torrid 2021 season, with injuries in tandem with poor performances resulting in another year of mediocrity for the league's second-youngest club.

Maher says it would make “perfect sense” for Clarkson to link up with former Hawks football manager Mark Evans at the Suns.

“No one’s barracking against Stewie Dew, in fact, we’re barracking hard for Stewie Dew on this show,” Maher explained on SEN’s Bob and Andy.

“His contract is up at the end of 2022, if you’re the AFL, how can you walk past this opportunity?

“This is an AFL construct, this is not a footy club, and it hasn’t worked, and irrespective of its win over Richmond, it’s not working.

“It hasn’t gained ground, there’s no traction, it’s got no foothold, it’s flaky, and it’s been discussed as to whether that licence should head to Tasmania.

“There’s a universe in which Alastair Clarkson going to Gold Coast makes about the most perfect sense you could possibly need to make.

“He’s already created the legend, this could be his legacy.”

The Suns currently sit 14th of the ladder, with just five wins for the season.

Sam Mitchell will replace Clarkson as senior coach of Hawthorn once the latter's contract expires at the end of the 2022 season.
