Why Essendon should be “chips in” on emerging star

2021-07-06T12:32+10:00

Would acquiring a ready-made key forward make Essendon a genuine finals threat?

Harrison Jones is raw but has shown plenty of promise while veteran Cale Hooker, the main focal point in Essendon’s attack, isn’t getting any younger.

The Bombers bolstered their tall stocks by signing ruck-forward Peter Wright last off-season, but more is need if they want to seriously challenge for the premiership.

Kane Cornes is of the opinion that Essendon should target Gold Coast spearhead Ben King with his contract at the Suns due to expire at the end of 2022.

“I’d be chips in on Ben King,” Cornes told SEN Mornings.

“I know the Saints would be all in trying to get him to play with his brother.

“If the Bombers could pull off getting Ben King at the end of next year, I’d be putting all my eggs in that basket if I could.

“He’s the player that I would love to see in Essendon colours if he chose to leave the Gold Coast Suns.”

King, 20, sits fourth in the race for this year’s Coleman Medal with a career-best 38 goals.

The emerging Gold Coast star is ranked sixth in the AFL for total marks inside 50 this season.

He's kicked 80 goals in 46 games since the Suns selected him with pick No.6 in the 2018 National Draft.
