Destination club? Gold Coast backmen confident player exodus days are behind them

2021-07-07T11:40+10:00

Gold Coast defenders Jack Lukosius and Sam Collins have expressed faith in their club’s rebuild, with Collins declaring he would feel a “greater sense of achievement” helping the Suns land some success.

The Suns were buoyed by one of their greatest ever victories last Thursday, when they took down the reigning premiers Richmond at Marvel Stadium.

Despite their win, Gold Coast have endured yet another indifferent year, and Collins admitted the lack of consistency was “a frustration.”

“We knew (the win) was going to come it was just a matter of when, (and) I suppose that is a frustration at the moment that we’re not able to put that out consistently,” Collins said on SEN Breakfast.

“So that’s our challenge moving forward.”

Player retention is another challenge for the club, but Lukosius believes the “culture change” from his arrival at the club in 2018 had been “huge”.

“No one’s really left on any bad terms or anything since I’ve joined the club, I think we’re in a really good place,” Lukosius said.

“I think that’s hopefully in the past now.”

Collins was confident that the current group was “buying in”, and gave a subtle dig towards those who have left the club to chase success and recognition.

“The challenge is staying in the tough times and enjoying the good times,” Collins added.

“People have left previously and gone on and been successful at other clubs, but I know personally if I can stay at the Suns and turn the club into a successful team then that’s going to be a greater sense of achievement.”

Gold Coast will hope to continue their good form, when they travel to Ballarat on Sunday to take on the Giants at MARS Stadium.
